Another night the cars scream past, on the 101 Tail Lights blazing comet tracks, she sticks out her thumb Two pairs of jeans and a wrinkled blouse, in an old knapsack It don’t matter now just where she goes, just as long as it ain’t back Breakers crashing on the beach, dancing in the sun Three years gone to hell and back, why walk now if you can run Got a friend up Frisco way, says come stay with me Phones shut off and nobody's home, ain’t got no place else to be Put your head down and soldier through As the lies pile higher you can't see the truth Everybody wants to buy a piece but you ain't got nothing left to sell It was s'posed to be different this time Another man never learnin’ how to walk that line The only thing that you can trust is you The moon so high over Ventura again today Headed south to that Hollywood freeway Got a message from a buddy sayin call if you're around Maybe it's time she up and left, this whole goddamn town Running harder just to make the gate, got a flight out east Floor to crash on for a couple days, time to grab a drink at least Starts up all over again, no place to call home Airport full of bodies, but she never felt so alone

Twilight sky fades from black to blue like the colors of a bruise but without the hint of pain The sun dives deeper behind the mountains like a stone into darkened waters thrown never to be seen again All I knew used to feel like it was home and I never felt alone never had to say goodbye Is it the rule all passions have to fade, forever’s made to give away, turns like wine to alkali? Blacktop Road, rushes by the tires –won't be long till I expire – and nobody needs to know About the pain that goes through a soul, when he’s all out of hope, they’ll forget him when he’s gone... They say the more things change the more that they all stay the same so I guess I’m not to blame any more than you are too We were young and we were only having fun whys it hurt now that it’s done or am I giving up too soon Blacktop Road underneath my feet –knows this world just has me beat – and no one needs to know About the pain, that goes through a soul, when he knows , they’ll forget me when I'm gone... One night in dreams, I saw the ghosts of who we were when it was so free and pure in every thought and every deed but i just woke, and put my shoes back on my feet headed back down to the street on these roads in which I bleed

Our story starts in the dead of night in a lonely prairie town. After the people have gone to bed, someone rides through, the horse as quiet as a ghost. The man gets off his horse, loosens a bundle, and drops it down the town well, riding off as silent as he came In the morning the sun comes up, and people awaken to a scream. Ring the bells, we best gather round Woke up this morning, we can’t believe our eyes and what we found In the bottom of the well, so dark as caverns deep Lies the body of a woman, peaceful as in sleep the water hides the details of her face how did she come to end her life in such a dismal place Or did somebody here, think to hide The evil deeds that lurk behind their cold dead eyes And in the morning they scream There’s a body in the well, dropped so far we couldn’t tell Look around you brother, evil lies among us here today You best repent for all your sins, or he may come back here again Before the sun sets there is gonna be, a hanging out this way Gathered in the town square, suspicious looks are cast around. Was it you? Was it you? Whispers swirl around the collected mass Until finally one man steps forward - and on the steps, he speaks Brother Mark, can you explain us why, Your cousin left us, and never took the time to say goodbye Or brother Bill, down in the sawmill camp There's a lot of shadows dancing, in the night light from the lamps Reverend Joe, the farmer's daughter’s been, spending time, you call it prayer but could it be a lie Or was it you, who choked the life from some poor soul Who knew your secret, and now she lies in that hole And in the morning they scream There's a body in the well, dropped so far we couldn’t tell Look around you brother, evil lies among us here today You best repent for all your sins, or he may come back here again Before the night falls there is gonna be, a hanging out this way Secrets lie, in the bona fide Dark and dusty evil corners of collective little minds Everyone knows what they’re gonna do But what happens when the fingers point at you And so they drag him to the tree… There's a body in the well, dropped so far we couldn’t tell Look around you brother, evil lies among us here today You tried to cover up your sins The devil came you let him in before we string you up have you got any last words left to say And as his body swung and swayed All the people kneeled and prayed with their knees that sank so deep into the mud into the ground they hardly even noticed that A rider came in oh so fast and shouted to the group A man...just confessed...in the next town

She pulls the secondhand ring from her finger and sets it by the bed Her head just hurts from thinking about all the lies he said It’s not fair that he gets away and he needs to pay for leavin A box from the drawer with her dad's .44, now it's time for her to get... She’d always been a tough one, but for him she’d been forgiving filled her heart with dreams about the life that they’d be living The day finally came of his getaway, house empty and the money too Now the time had come for vengeance and she knew just what to do Better settle up your debts and go back home Won’t be alive when night turns into dawn Better make peace with your maker because she's getting even and she's moving on She's got a shovel in the back and a gun in the rack and she knows where he’ll be hiding As the hours just go slippin away in the time he thinks he’s biding She knows she wont get her money, and there’s no way to get back time But a six foot hole and a pine box that says that she’s the winner this time. Better settle up your debts and get back home Won’t be alive when night turns into dawn Better make peace with your maker because she's getting even and she's moving on She walks him to the dark hole, in that sweaty Georgia night and as he begs for his forgiveness, she knows she’s done things right She says this must be your lucky day, but I suggest that you should run Cuz if I ever see your face again, the last thing you’ll see’s my gun...

Story 04:53
Tell me a story I like the ones where you would lay out for an hour like the most elaborate song Tales of the glory that is wasted on those too young to realize those days are almost gone And if I try, I can close my eyes real tight and I’ll pretend you didn’t break my heart Empty words for absent ears, and that's a start Sell me illusions I’d rather think that this is all that we’ll ever have and it’s all within our grasp And the confusion will roll away like swollen raindrops running down the paned and broken glass And if I try, I can close my eyes real tight and I’ll pretend you didn’t break my heart Empty words for absent ears, and that's a start and all the times i wasted, all the things i didn’t say the future just becomes a bunch of yesterdays and when i told you I’d take it all in stride I guess i lied But i had no idea what lay inside Whispers of reasons, hardly loud enough, to hear among vibrations that shake like memories we try and reach out, trying to grab on and hold them, before we forget just like the need to breathe And if I try, I can close my eyes real tight and I’ll pretend you didn’t break my heart Empty words for absent ears, and that's a start For Nic and Tim

about

The 44 Territories Detroit, Michigan

The 44 Territories know they are different. In taking their interpretation of Americana music – heartfelt lyricism, twangy guitars and evocative imagery – and marrying it to a distinctly Detroit rhythm and drive, they believe they have created something special. Now, they look to prove it, on record and at shows. ... more
